• Workshop Description: The 2020 Washington DC Virtual Inquiry Based Learning Workshop is somewhat similar to in-person 4-day IBL workshops, and is a practical, hands-on workshop. The design of the workshop has been developed since summer 2019, and is developed from the ground up as an online, virtual experience. No prior IBL experience is required, and the workshop is geared towards new IBL instructors. This workshop is not ideal for instructors with significant IBL experience.

• Who’s this workshop for: This workshop is designed for faculty new or wanting to learn more about inquiry-based learning. Faculty from two-year colleges and primarily undergraduate institutions are the target audience, although all interested faculty are welcome. Non-tenure track faculty are also encouraged to attend this virtual workshop.

• Dates: June 23-26, 2020

• Schedule: The four days will differ, and the workshop is designed for virtual/online engagement and understanding the limitations of the format. Synchronous sessions will on Zoom.

  • Tuesday and Thursday will be longer days with five 45-minute sessions from 8am (PT) to 2pm (PT). We’ll also take a break from 10:45 to 12:00 PT. These sessions will be “synchronous” and we ask participants to be present for the video conference calls. Video calls will be recorded and posted.

  • Wednesday is an individual work day, where participants will focus on a target course, collaborate with their subgroup and facilitators, and work through provided materials (e.g. videos and articles).

  • Friday morning is also individual work time from 8am to 12pm PT with group check in.

  • Friday 12-2pm PT is a zoom conference call for participant sharing of their plans and development, and a closing session.

  • Rationale: the 8am to 2pm PT time frame is 11am to 5pm ET, and was selected so that the workshop fits in the 8am to 5pm time frame for all 4 times zones in the continental US (with apologies to those in HI).

• Follow-Up Support: One hour follow-up meetings will be scheduled in August, September, and October via video conference call. We will also create an email distribution list for participants and facilitators to stay connected, share, support, ask one another about teaching and learning with IBL.

• Attendance expectations: The IBL workshop meets from 8am (PT) to 2pm (PT), Tuesday to Friday. Participants are expected to attend all synchronous sessions, and be engaged as appropriate the entire four days (as outlined above). Participants can catch up via recordings when necessary, and we understand that participants have obligations (e.g. childcare) during these challenging times.

Q: Am I eligible to attend? 

A:  Math Instructors of all ranks employed at colleges and universities with undergraduate programs in North America are eligible to apply. This includes community college instructors and non-tenure track instructors (lecturers, adjuncts). Early-career instructors are especially encouraged to attend. K-12 teachers and graduate students are not eligible for this workshop. 

Q: What do I need to bring?

A: You will need your computer, a good internet connection, and your course materials. Internet access is a participant responsibility. The workshop will be using zoom conference call to host the workshop. Participants do not need a license or special software to attend the conference. More technical details will be provided to workshop registrants. Earbuds are also recommended for audio quality and avoiding feedback.

Q: Is the registration fee refundable?

A: The registration fee is non-refundable.
