Virtual Inquiry Based Learning Mini Course

Course via Zoom

June 16-July 2

  • Mini-Course Description: This 3-week Summer 2020 Virtual Inquiry Based Learning mini-course is a new format for engaging faculty with the same PRODUCT 4-day workshop materials that have been in development since 2014. Compared to the 4 day virtual workshops, the mini-course format has fewer contact hours per day, spread out over more days, which provides more “out of class” time to absorb, reflect upon, and engage with the ideas, and to develop your own IBL course with the support of the workshop team.

  • Who’s this mini-course for: This mini-course is geared towards new IBL instructors; no prior IBL experience is required. This mini-course is not intended for instructors who already have significant IBL experience. Tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure track faculty from two- and four- year colleges and universities are welcome.

  • Dates: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays June 16-July 2, 2020.

  • Schedule: The mini-course includes 3 synchronous meeting blocks per week for three weeks. These meeting blocks will be via Zoom Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 1pm-4pm EDT/10am-1pm PDT. There will be a half-hour break at 2:15pm EDT/ 11:15am PDT. These sessions are designed to engage participants in collaborative activities in an online format and over the three weeks participants will make progress to plan their own IBL course for the 2020-2021 academic year. We ask that participants plan to be present for all synchronous Zoom meetings and budget time to complete 3-5 hours of asynchronous work each week of the mini-course. Sessions will be recorded and posted for later reference.

    • Synchronous Sessions: Sessions will focus on video lesson study, discussion of literature related to math teaching and learning, the “nuts and bolts” of IBL, and resources for planning your own course.

    • Asynchronous Work: Time between sessions will be an important part of the mini-course. Participants will work alone, in pairs, or in small groups to make progress on their own course planning within the supportive framework of the mini-course. We will also ask you to read articles on teaching and learning mathematics, watch short video clips of IBL classrooms in action, and participate in some asynchronous discussions (e.g., in Google Docs or discussion threads).

  • Follow-Up Support: One hour follow-up meetings will be scheduled in August, September, and October via a video conference call. An email distribution list for participants and facilitators is created to allow everyone to stay connected, and share experiences, questions and ideas about teaching and learning with IBL.

  • Attendance expectations: Participants are expected to attend all synchronous sessions and to engage in the asynchronous work. However, we understand that unexpected obligations may arise during these challenging times, so recordings of sessions will be available to allow for catching up if necessary.
